Loadouts for Life

Every week on The Save Point, I recommend one tool I think is worth owning. I try to choose something simple, reliable, and always genuinely useful.

These are not reviews or sponsored placements.

Every one is an item I’ve personally used and watched it stand the test of time. If you decide to pick something up through the affiliate links, it helps support the stream at no extra cost. No pressure, just good tools for people who care about the lives they're building.

Slotted Fish Turner

Unfortunately, the Victorinox version of this tool I have and love appears to no longer be in production, but this Lamson one comes highly recommended.

I know, you’re thinking, it’s just a spatula, I have 20 of them already, I’ve never given it a second thought. Yeah, that’s because you never had one this good. A spatula that makes you feel.

The blade is curved for maximum leverage and scraping (not in non-stick please!) capabilities, it’s thin enough to get under anything without disturbing it, and still strong enough to carry food from place to place.

I have about a dozen turning tools by my stove, but this is the one I’ll stop cooking to go wash to make sure I can use it. It’s hard to explain how good it is. Get one, kids.

Leatherman Skeletool CX

$90. Seems pricey at first glance, but given what you get, it’s actually priced very well. Knives alone with half the steel quality can cost twice as much. The 154CM steel is a fantastic balance between cost, edge hardness, and ease of sharpening.

The knife is outboard so you don’t have to untangle the entire tool just to use it like you do with a lot of multitools. It also contains a carabiner, bottle opener, screwdriver, and super strong pliers/wirecutters. Honestly, it’s all of the tools you realistically need in your pocket on the daily.

It’s a smidge heavy, but you can’t beat the package for all the functionality it offers. I’ve been through a dozen multitools over the years and this is the only one that keeps making it back into my pockets. Get one, kids.

iFixIt ProTech Toolkit

I can’t give you a specific use case for when you’ll need this toolkit, but damn, you’ll be glad you have it when you do.

It comes with a few dozen bits to get you past just about every screw known to man, a bunch of prying tools, some tweezers, it’s got it all. If you’ve ever needed to get inside of anything electronic, even just to replace batteries, this is worth the investment.

And if you’ve got kids (or anyone else who breaks things frequently), this’ll make you seem like a repair god. I can’t count the jams this thing has gotten me out of. Definitely a buy-it-for-life tool. Get one, kids.
